Mahindra Thar 2020: If you are living in the 21st Century & do not recognize the ‘THAR’ moniker, then you clearly have been living in the Caves. Mahindra Thar is an Iconic SUV; it is part of the Cult. It is well-known for its legendary off-road capabilities and the classic design. The next-generation Thar is one of the most anticipated SUV in this age, people have been spamming on Mahindra’s Social Media pages asking “When is Thar coming & #BringbackThar have been trending on Social Media.

Since the past few months (more like years), Mahindra has been extensively testing the next-generation Thar from Kashmir to Kanyakumari & Porbandar to Silchar. It has been spotted by enthusiasts across India & spy shots have just created hype. This time the homegrown & India’s favorite SUV maker doesn’t want to leave any stone unturned & the Thar has once again been spotted testing in Bangalore as a part of component testing. But for the first time ever, clear images of the interior, as well as exterior of the new 2020 Mahindra Thar, have surfaced online.

The latest snaps reveal the ‘Aqua Marine Blue’ shade of the upcoming Thar, which we have seen on the ‘Thar 700’ as well as the Mahindra Marazzo. It is seen sporting the ‘Thar’ badging on the tail lamps, on the ORVMs, and inside door panels. This test mule seems to be a hard-top version of the Thar and gets blacked-out alloy wheels. As seen in the spy shot, the new Thar is likely to get partially removable front roof panels. Mahindra could also offer it with the option of removable door panels, similar to the Jeep Wrangler which looks strikingly similar.

The Wranglerish Look

Interior of the all-new 2020 Mahindra Thar

The interior of the new 2020 Mahindra Thar gets a complete makeover. It is completely different from its predecessor. The next-generation Thar gets a fresh layout for the dashboard and the quality of materials used seems to be leaps and bounds better than its predecessor. Taking the centre stage of the dashboard seems to be a new touchscreen infotainment system. This touchscreen unit might feature Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and Mahindra’s Blue Sense application’s compatibility. The steering wheel is also a completely new unit and it will get the industry’s “new normal” i.e. Sunroof.

The Interior

On noticing the details, one can spot that the center console of the next-gen Thar, which gets faux carbon fiber treatment surrounding the AC vents. The round AC vents are also re-designed with subtle chrome inserts and the overall fit and finish quality seems impressive, at least in pictures. The front seats seem to be very comfortable and also the 2 levers can be spotted as well. The regular gear shifter stick while the other is a Transfer case lever, i.e. high/low range selector. The new Thar seems to be very practical, at the rear it gets forward-facing seats with adjustable headrests and an ample amount of legroom.

The particular test mule was spotted in 18” All Terrain tires from CEAT. It is expected to be offered in 2 engine options, a 2.2L mHawk Diesel & a 2L mStallion Turbo Petrol & is expected to be offered in Manual as well as Automatic Transmission. It is no secret that the old Mahindra Thar did not have enough equipment to justify a price tag of roughly Rs 10 lakh ex-showroom (for the final ‘700’ limited CRDe version).

However, the new model packs substantially more, as evident from the interior shot shared, one will find buttons for TCS (Traction Control System) and HDC (Hill Descent Control) to the right of the steering column. The rest of the switch panel might reveal even more functionalities.

The side profile looks cool with Black alloys

Talking about the launch timeline, the next-generation 2020 Mahindra Thar will make its public debut this Independence Day, i.e. on 15th August 2020 & there couldn’t have been a better day to unveil the all-new Thar.

It is expected to be officially launched around the festive season this year and will be priced around INR 10 lakhs – Rs. 15 lakhs, (Ex-showroom). Once the next-generation Mahindra Thar arrives in the market, it will rival against the likes of 4x4s which include the upcoming Force Gurkha BS6 and the Maruti Suzuki Jimny, which were displayed at the Auto Expo 2020.
