Just a few months ago BMW launched the all-New 2 Series Gran Coupe here in India. When launched the 2 Series was termed to be the cheapest BMW which one could buy in the country.
Few months after the launch BMW has launched the ‘Black Shadow’ edition in the country with a sticker price of just INR 42,30,000.
The 2 Series will be produced locally in-house at BMW’s plant at Chennai. Let’s check out what the #2Irresistible Black Shadow version of the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe` has got to offer to us.
The special edition of the BMW 2 Series gets a special BMW Individual high-gloss shadow line package along with BMW ‘M’ Performance parts. The large grille on the small 2 Series reminds one of Darth Vader which is yet again done in a high-gloss finish. The high-gloss black mesh-style M front grille lends a highly dynamic front look. The raked-back headlight units with double-barrel LED detailing give it a unique look and also adds to the aggressive look.
A look towards the side profile and the notice the way the wing-mirrors are finished in black which just helps to uplift the aesthetics of the alien-looking 2 Gran Coupe giving an impressive depth effect. The flowing roofline that flows into the fastback-like rear and that’s what gives it its unique look.
A short walk to the rear and notice how the ‘M’ Performance rear spoiler in high-gloss black adds to the brilliant looking rear to give it an attractive touch of visual flair. If you think that the rear spoiler is just for aesthetics then you are wrong my friend. The spoiler is functional and helps to optimize the air stream around the car to reduce lift. The L-shaped LED taillights also give it a nice look. Adding to the attraction are the pillarless windows.
Go lower down the rear and you will appreciate how the black chrome tailpipe finishes enhance the sporty rear view of the car. All these elements come together to make the 2 Series indeed #2irresistible.
The BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé ‘Shadow Edition’ is available in two exciting colors – Alpine White (non-metallic) and Black Sapphire (metallic). The upholstery available is Sensatec Oyster | Black.
The BMW 2 Series GC in its standard avatar had some amazing alloy design and the special edition and the black treatment just makes it look more classy and sassy. The ‘Black Shadow’ wears an 18-inch M Performance Y-Spoke Styling 554 M forged wheels in Jet Black Matt which just makes it look rad.
The BMW Floating hub cap features the BMW logo, it remains leveled at all times. Rolls Royce inspiration? Maybe.
The interior is designed to accentuate cabin spaciousness with the driver-focused cockpit with exquisite fabrics and a wide panorama glass sunroof. The newly built Sport Seats with electrical memory feature and spacious cabin space give rear passengers an adequate knee room for greater long-distance comfort.
You sit low and those seated in the rear seats may find their hair touch the roof liner. Although BMW has tried to maximize comfort by scooping the roof liner. However, the Coupe silhouette eats away the headroom. It’s still a comfortable place to be in but, it’s best only two people are seated on the rear bench since the vehicle is not too wide and has a huge floor tunnel.
Since it’s a Gran Coupe it’s expected to be used more for the highways and that’s where the 430-litres of boot space comes in handy. Need to access the boot while on move? You can access it easily as the seat folding configuration is 40/20/40 split. Need to haul larger luggage? Worry not BMW has got it sorted by providing tags in the boot to push the seats down as 60:40 ratio.
A segment-first illuminated trim works as a decorative lighting element with a space-shaping effect in the dark. For every mood, Ambient Lighting with six dimmable designs creates an atmosphere. It’s Christmas time, let’s party in.
Many of the innovations of BMW ConnectedDrive are smashing the breakthrough barrier in the automotive industry. 3D Navigation, a 12.3-inch digital instrument display and a 10.25-inch control display are included in the new BMW Live Cockpit Technical cockpit concept.
The citizens will use their BMW Virtual Assistant to perform vehicle functions. Hands speak to BMW Gesture Control, who understands a variety of tasks from six predefined hand gestures. Inductional, wireless charging of mobiles is possible via the integrated handset holder in the center console.
The Rear View Camera Parking Assistant promotes parking in close areas. The Reversing Assistant supports the return of a car park or through narrow driveways without parallel. Apple CarPlay Wireless offers integrated car mobile communication to various functions.
The heart is a BMW TwinPower Turbo diesel engine with great power to display and exemplary efficiency and offers spontaneous responsiveness even at low engine speeds. All this makes your drive in the city just a tad-bit easy.
The two-litre four-cylinder diesel engine produces an output of 190 hp and a maximum torque of 400 Nm at 1,750 – 2,500 rpm. The car accelerates from 0 -100 km/hr in just 7.5 seconds. The eight-speed Steptronic sport automatic transmission performs smooth, almost imperceptible gearshifts.
To make your every drive engaging and giving pleasure, it comes with Launch Control setup, steering wheel paddle shifters (which feel great to hold), and cruise control with braking function. The Driving Experience Control switch offers different driving modes to suit individual driving styles – ECO PRO, Comfort and Sport.

The 2 Series Gran Coupe` ideally doesn’t have any rival in the Indian market. But, it takes a head-on fight against the upcoming Mercedes A-Class, BMW 330i, Skoda Octavia vRS, Skoda Superb, Jaguar XE and the upcoming Audi A3.
If one is happy with the polarizing grille upfront, then the BMW 2 series is really #irresistible. However, my personal choice would be the standard 2 Series just because of that turquoise blue paint job on offer which makes it an attention seeker on the road although it rides low.
